One of the best ever April Day Hoaxes has been
perpetrated in 2002, when the respectable British Sun Newspaper carried an
advertisement by Tesco, a large supermarket chain, which announced the
development of the genetically engineering "whistling carrot." The
carrot has been specifically developed to include tapered air holes over its
entirety so that when cooked, the carrots would whistle.
The signal emitted by the ready-to-be-consumed-carrots
was claimed to be at least 97 decibel, and was caused by the artificially
modified genes, extremely sensitive for heat, which managed the air pockets
within the carrot to expend and push out the air, generating the distinctive audio
signal to announce its readiness, like a teakettle when it reaches full boil.
